Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Power, is a night greater than a thousand months. It is a time when Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, and blessings are abundantly showered upon those who seek Him. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions would dedicate themselves entirely to worship during the last ten nights of Ramadan, striving to maximize the blessings of this sacred night.
Aishah (RA) reported:
“When the last ten nights of Ramadan began, the Prophet (ﷺ) would tighten his waist belt (indicating more devotion), spend the night in worship, and wake his family for prayers.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 2024; Sahih Muslim, 1174)
To make the most of Laylatul Qadr, here are some recommended acts of worship, including additional devotions such as Salatul Tasbeeh, recitation of Surah Mulk and Surah Alif Lam Meem Sajdah, and the importance of praying Isha and Fajr in congregation:
1. Perform Extra Salah (Tahajjud and Nafl Prayers)
Standing in prayer during Laylatul Qadr is highly emphasized. Tahajjud (Night Prayer) and long recitations of the Qur’an are particularly recommended.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever stands in prayer during Laylatul Qadr out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 1901)
2. Recite the Special Dua for Laylatul Qadr
Aishah (RA) asked the Prophet (ﷺ):
“O Messenger of Allah, if I find Laylatul Qadr, what should I say?”
The Prophet (ﷺ) replied:
“Say: اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني (Allahumma innaka ‘Afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni).”
“O Allah! You are Most Forgiving, and You love to forgive, so forgive me.”
(Tirmidhi, 3513)
This simple yet profound dua is a powerful way to seek Allah’s forgiveness and mercy.
3. Recite the Qur’an
Since the Qur’an was revealed on Laylatul Qadr, reciting it during this night brings immense rewards. Reflect on its meanings and strive to connect with its message.
Recommended Surahs to recite include:
- Surah Al-Qadr (Surah 97): This chapter highlights the significance of Laylatul Qadr.
- Surah Ad-Dukhan (Surah 44): This Surah mentions the blessed night of revelation.
- Surah Mulk (Surah 67): Reciting this Surah before sleeping is highly recommended. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“There is a Surah in the Qur’an of thirty verses which will intercede for its reciter until he is forgiven: Tabarakalladhi bi yadihil mulk (Surah Mulk).”
(Tirmidhi, 2891)
- Surah Alif Lam Meem Sajdah (Surah 32): This Surah is also recommended for its profound meanings and the prostration of recitation (Sajdah Tilawah).
4. Engage in Dhikr and Istighfar
Remembrance of Allah (Dhikr) and seeking forgiveness (Istighfar) are key acts of worship during Laylatul Qadr.
Recommended Surahs to recite include:
- Recite: “SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi, SubhanAllahil Azeem” (Glory be to Allah and all praise is due to Him).
- Recite Sayyidul Istighfar (The Best Dua for Forgiveness):
“Allahumma anta Rabbi, la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduka, wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wa’dika mastata’tu…”
“O Allah! You are my Lord. There is no god except You. You created me, and I am Your servant…”
5. Give Charity and Help the Needy
Charity given during Laylatul Qadr is multiplied greatly in reward. Providing Iftar, giving Sadaqah, and supporting Islamic causes are highly encouraged.
6. Make Heartfelt Dua for Yourself and the Ummah
Laylatul Qadr is a night of answered prayers. Use this opportunity to:
- Seek forgiveness for past sins.
- Make dua for the Ummah, the sick, and those in hardship.
- Ask Allah for Jannah and protection from Hellfire.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Nothing changes Qadr (destiny) except Dua.”
(Tirmidhi, 2139)
7. Perform Salatul Tasbeeh
Salatul Tasbeeh is a special prayer that involves the recitation of specific phrases of glorification (Tasbeeh) during the prayer. It is a powerful way to seek forgiveness and draw closer to Allah.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said to his uncle Abbas (RA):
“O Abbas, O my uncle, shall I not give you, shall I not present to you, shall I not donate to you ten things? If you act upon them, Allah will forgive your sins, the first and the last of them, the old and the new, the unintentional and the intentional, the small and the great, the hidden and the open.”
(Abu Dawood, 1297; Tirmidhi, 481)
8. Pray Isha and Fajr in Congregation
Praying Isha and Fajr in congregation carries immense rewards, especially during the last ten nights of Ramadan.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever prays Isha in congregation, it is as if he has prayed half of the night. And whoever prays Fajr in congregation, it is as if he has prayed the entire night.”
(Sahih Muslim, 656)
9. Perform Salatul Hajat (Prayer of Need)
Salatul Hajat is a special prayer for seeking Allah’s help in fulfilling one’s lawful desires and needs. It is a powerful way to turn to Allah during Laylatul Qadr.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever has a need from Allah or from any of His creation, let him perform Wudu and pray two Rak’ahs, then let him praise Allah and send blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ), and then say: La ilaha illallahul Halimul Karim, Subhanallahi Rabbil ‘Arshil ‘Azim, Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘Alamin…”
(Tirmidhi, 479)
