2. Recommended Sunnahs and Etiquettes of Sehri
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us etiquettes to maximize the benefits of Sehri.
Sehri Sunnahs to Follow:
1. Delaying Sehri Until Just Before Fajr: The Prophet ﷺ said:
“My Ummah will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten to break their fast and delay their Sehri.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, 1697)
- Best Time for Sehri: The last third of the night, just before Fajr.
2. Eating Simple and Wholesome Foods: The Prophet ﷺ ate dates and water at Sehri.
“How excellent are dates as the believer’s Sehri!”
(Sunan Abu Dawood, 2345)
3. Drinking Water for Hydration: It prevents dehydration and makes fasting easier.
4. Making Intentions (Niyyah) for Fasting: The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever does not make the intention of fasting before Fajr, his fast is not valid.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood, 2454)
5. Engaging in Dhikr, Istighfar, and Dua: Allah praises those who seek forgiveness at Sehri time:
“And in the hours before dawn, they would seek forgiveness.”
(Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:18)
Key Lesson:
Sehri is an opportunity for Tawbah (repentance), Dhikr (remembrance of Allah), and making heartfelt Duas.
